Softball: Hersey clings to half-game lead in East

In the only Mid-Suburban League softball game to be played on Friday, defending Mid-Suburban League East champion Hersey took care of business with a 12-0 win over visiting Wheeling in Arlington Heights.

The other two MSL East games (Prospect at Elk Grove and Buffalo Grove at Rolling Meadows) were postponed due to the adverse weather and rescheduled for next Tuesday.

Junior Brianna Luciano (4 strikeouts) threw a 3-hitter while raising her record to 8-4 as the Huskies moved to 18-5 and 11-4 in the MSL East, a half-game ahead of Prospect (10-4) with Elk Grove in third place at 8-5.

Luciano also led the Huskies' offense by going 2-for-3 with a double. Asia Luboyeski (triple), Renae Curtis and Sarah Bailitz had the other hits for the Hersey.

Nikki Ferraro was 2-for-2 for Wheeling (0-17, 0-14) while teammate Emmie LaCaeyse (1-for-2) also singled.

Hersey's last East game is Monday at Prospect at 4:45 p.m.

Palatine 9, Resurrection 0: It was Senior Day but junior first baseman Amanda Stanczuk took the offensive spotlight with a 4-for-4 performance that included 5 RBI, 2 doubles and 1 run as the Pirates raised their record to 22-5 with the nonconference win.

Classmate Sarah Grossman (7 strikeouts) did not allow a hit through the first six innings and ended up with a 1-hitter for her 15th win in 17 decisions.

Stanczuk accounted for 6 of the Pirates' 9 runs.

"I wanted to do it for the seniors," she said. "They've done so much for our program and I've really enjoyed playing with them, so I wanted to do my best for them on senior day."

Barrington wins twice: Barrington (27-2) defeated Lyons 3-2 (six innings due to 1:15 time limit) and Andrew 9-3 (five innings due to the time limit) at the Greg Easter Illinois Coaches Association tourney being hosted by the Fillies at their own Fields of Dreams.

Senior Catherine McMahon (11-1) worked the first five innings to earn the win against Lyons as the offense was led by juniors Tori Meyer (2-for-2, 2 doubles) and Kendall Peterson (2-for-3, double). Jessica Bellis and Jenna Patino also had hits for the Fillies. Meyer earned her second save of the season as she struck out two in the sixth inning.

In the Fillies' second game against Andrew, Barrington's 9-hit attack was led by Patino who went 3-for-3 with a double and RBI. Abbey Jacobsen, Katherine Stagnito and Caroline Hoppe also had doubles. Bellis tripled while Meyer (11-1) was the winning pitcher, striking out four and tossing a 7-hitter.
