Boys volleyball: Libertyville second in Northside Classic

Libertyville takes second: Libertyville improved to 27-5 with a second-place finish in the Northside Classic (New Trier/Glenbrook North tournament).

Libertyville defeated Glenbrook North 25-18, 27-25, Elk Grove 25-12, 25-11, Warren 25-19, 25-20 and Hersey 25-14, 25-22 but lost to Barrington 19-25, 22-25.

"We played some really great volleyball this weekend, especially our Saturday morning semifinal," Libertyville coach Jenny Smith said. "We lost focus in the championship match and failed to play our game which involves tough serving and scrappy defense. Overall, I'm very happy with the way the boys performed. We obviously have some things to tweak before postseason and we're lucky to have a few weeks to get better."

On the tournament, Jack Stevens had 58 kills, 6 blocks, 26 digs and 3 aces

Brendan Cook had 23 kills, 1 5 blocks, 6 digs and 8 aces.

Colin Hawkinson had 25 kills, 6 blocks, 27 digs and 3 aces.

Zach Ford had 10 kills, 3 blocks and 4 digs.

Mark Demaree had 7 kills and 9 blocks

Carter Schaffnit had 104 assists, 3 blocks and 15 digs.

Ryan Winiger had 53 digs, 2 aces and 3 assists.

Sammy Stortz had 13 digs and Kevin Villanueva had 3 aces.

Warren goes 2-0: On Saturday at the Northside Classic, Warren went 2-0, defeating Lake Forest, 21-25, 25-20, 25-21 and Oak Park-River Forest, 25-22, 25-23.

Against Lake Forest, Kyle Wells had 17 kills and Freddy Harris had 6 blocks.

Setters Ian Schilling and Taylor Vander-Jeugdt had 19 and 17 assists respectively.

Harris, Schilling and Joe Zdarsky each had 5 digs.

Against Oak Park-River Forest, Wells had 11 kills and Caden Fox had 9 digs.

Vander-Jeugdt had 11 assists while Schilling had 9 assists.

Stevenson splits: Also Saturday at the Northside Classic, Stevenson split its two matches and won the seventh place game against Lake Forest.

Stevenson lost to Oak Park-River Forest, 25-19, 27-25 and defeated Lake Forest, 25-13, 25-12.

Against Lake Forest, Gavin Meng had 7 kills and Haddon Kay had 18 assists while Andrii Yerokhin had 8 digs.

Against Oak Park-River Forest, Leo Chen had 11 kills and George Lie had 15 digs.

Setter Will Sorenson had 27 assists.

Stevenson is now 24-8 on the season.
