Boys volleyball: Barrington wins Northside Invite

Barrington's boys volleyball team, already the champion in the Mid-Suburban West, has added another impressive achievement to its resume.

The Broncos topped Libertyville 25-19, 25-22 in the title matchup of the Northside Invite on Saturday.

Michael O'toole had a big hitting performance with a team-best 15 kills. Kyle Vasquez had a team-best 8 digs, with O'toole contributing 7.

Evan Carroll finished with 23 assists, and Carroll and Petar Lumovic each had 2 blocks.

Earlier, Barrington defeated Glenbard West 25-21, 25-21 in the semifinals behind another 15-kill effort from O'toole. Thomas Chapman led the way with 8 digs, Vasquez had 7 and Carroll delivered 23 assists.

The team Barrington will face in the Mid-Suburban League championship game on May 17 also competed in the Northside Invite.

MSL East Division champ Hersey went 2-1 in pool play, with a loss to New Trier and wins against Lake Zurich and Lake Forest.

The Huskies won that pool by tiebreaker but ended up finishing fourth after dropping their semifinal to Libertyville and the third-place contest against Glenbard West, both in two sets.

Hersey coach Nancy Lill said her team, "ran out of gas today, limping to the finish line after playing 13 matches in eight days. This morning we didn't play with the energy and consistency that we need to be successful against the top teams in the state."

Jake Mailloux earned a spot on the all-tournament team after generating a team-best 32 kills. Camran Saeed had 27 and Joe Nugent had 24.

Nugent also finished 26-for-28 serving with 3 aces and had a team-best 17 blocks.

Jakub Migus provided 81 setting assists, and Lucas Irwin came up with 35 digs.

Lill is looking forward to a return to a less frenzied rate of matches.

"It'll be great to get back in the gym and practice after this crazy stretch of competition," she said. "We look forward to preparing for the MSL championship and the postseason."
