Softball: Morelli's no-hitter fuels a Mundelein shutout victory

Senior pitcher Annie Morelli fired a 5-inning no-hitter with 10 strikeouts to help visiting Mundelein make short work of Waukegan 13-0 on Tuesday in North Suburban Conference softball.

Morelli walked two, and 50 of the 88 pitches she threw were strikes.

Kaitlyn Griffin finished 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, and Elise Bernett and Kira Buckner both drove in 2 runs for Mundelein (10-9 overall). Bernett and Mia Arnoux had doubles.

Grant 11, Antioch 4: Calista Warmowski hit 2 homers, including a grand slam, as the Bulldogs won in Northern Lake County Conference action to snap the Sequoits' 8-game winning streak.

Erin Bengston led off for Grant (17-5, 7-1) and was intentionally walked four times. Megan Mitchell went 4-for-5 batting behind her with 2 doubles and 3 RBI. Warmowski finished 3-for-5 with 6 RBI. Sydney Goessele was 3-for-5 with a homer and 2 RBI, and Liz Schram went 2-for-4.

Goessele went the distance in the circle and got help defensively from center fielder Gabby Rogalevich.

"This team just keeps showing up for each for other," Grant coach Chris Van Alstine said. "They believe in each other and work hard every day for each other. No other way to describe them other than they are playing like a team right now."

Antioch (12-6, 6-2) got home runs from Deighton Butenschoen (2 RBI) and Avery Malicki. Piper Foote was 2-for-4, and Amber Blake pitched 2⅔ scoreless innings in relief, striking out two.

Warren 7, Lake Zurich 6: The visiting Blue Devils weathered a pair of 3-run rallies by the Bears in the middle innings to improve to 18-1 overall and stay unbeaten in the North Suburban Conference at 9-0.

Elizabeth Chialdikas led the way for Lake Zurich by going 3-for-4, with each of those hits a double. Stephanie Keefe doubled and drove in 3 runs for the Bears (10-10, 6-4).

Ashlyn Kitter (double) and Becca Geiyer (2 RBI, 2 stolen bases) both had a pair of hits for Warren, and Carissa Topoinski drove in 2 runs. Claire Swedberg was 1-for-3 and stole 2 bases.

Caitlyn Britton earned the win, as Lydia Gratz contributed 3⅓ innings of scoreless 1-hit relief.

Libertyville 16, Lake Forest 0 (5 inn.): Winning pitcher Amanda Page (3 IP, 1 hit) and reliever Katie Jahncke combined on a 3 hitter, as the visiting Wildcats rolled to an NSC win.

The main offensive contributors for Libertyville (15-5, 7-2) included Sarah Hoyer (2-for-4, triple), Aliya Haddon (3-for-4, double), Maggie Evers (3-for-4, triple) and Emily Hilldale and Christine Zhang (both 2-for-3).

Grayslake North wins twice: The Knights picked up 2 forfeit victories against North Chicago to improve to 10-7 overall and 4-3 in the Northern Lake County Conference.

Grayslake Central 20, Round Lake 0: Elisa Koshy homered twice and drove in 4 runs, finishing 2-for-2 in the Northern Lake County Conference game.

Grace Bradley was 4-for-4 with a double for Grayslake Central (14-4, 7-4), while Libby Bien was 3-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI and Brooke Heraty was 3-for-3 with a double and 4 RBI. The Rams also got 2 hits apiece from Kelsey Whalen (2-for-2, triple, 3 RBI) and Nicole Buerger (2-for-3, 2 doubles). Nicole Warren contributed a triple.

Vernon Hills 15, Highland Park 3: Brooke Pieper went 3-for-4 with a triple and 2 RBI, as the host Cougars captured the Central Suburban League game.

Vernon Hills (9-9, 7-1) also got offensive contributions from Alexi Viviano (2-for-2, double, 3 runs), Delaney Bowen (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Nicole Pieper (1-for-2, double, 2 RBI), Tatiana Guletsky (1-for-2, 2 RBI) and Meg Finerty (2-for-2).

Stevenson 21, Zion-Benton 11: Hailey Barnes hit a grand slam, Gina Shanley also homered, and the host Patriots won a slugfest in North Suburban Conference action.

Hailey Peterson was 4-for-5 with a double for Stevenson (6-10, 5-4), while Shanley went 4-for-5 as well with 4 RBI. The Patriots got a pair of hits each from Anna Fossier (2-for-4, 2 doubles, 4 RBI), Maggie O'Brien (2-for-4, double, 3 RBI) and Maggie Trotter (2-for-5, double, 2 RBI).

Lakes 14, Wauconda 11: Rachel Becker, Kelsey Ulrich and Camryn Jones went a combined 12-for-14 with 6 extra-base hits, as the Eagles prevailed in Northern Lake County Conference action.

Becker was 4-for-4 with 4 runs scored, 2 doubles and 2 RBI, Ulrich went 4-for-5 with 2 doubles and 4 RBI, and Jones finished 4-for-5 with a homer, double and 5 RBI.

Ally Dietz was 2-for-5 with a double for Lakes, and Kayla Foote had a double as well.

Julia Fohlmeister went 3-for-3 for Wauconda, which also got a home run from Kayla Serio. Serio (double, 2 RBI), Kelly Weller (3 RBI) and Angelica Cho each had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs. Emily Weber contributed a double.
