Girls soccer: Wheaton Academy sneaks past Glenbard South

Erin Teevans can block out voices and other noises when she's in the middle of a soccer game.

But when she hears the familiar pitch of her Wheaton Academy coach Jeff Brooke when she's on the field, she attempts to use his instruction to her team's advantage.

She certainly heeded his guidance late in the second half, scoring with 15:35 remaining to lift the Warriors to a huge 1-0 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division victory over Glenbard South in Glen Ellyn.

With the victory Wheaton Academy (8-3-1, 5-0-0) completed another perfect conference season.

"I heard Brooke telling me to make a diagonal run and I just did that, but had to time it right so I wouldn't be off sides," Teevans said. "I knew to do it, but it helps to hear (Brooke) affirm it and he was yelling, 'Diagonal! Diagonal!' There were other people yelling too from the refs and the other coaches, but I only really heard (Brooke's) voice."

Brooke said he's blessed to have players like Teevans who want to be coached and are eager for that instruction.

"This team in particular wants information and wants to know how to get better," he said. "Teevans has been coachable from the start. She did a great job there making a diagonal run and catching it on her front foot and finished it brilliantly."

Sophie Lindquist's through ball set up Teevans for the game-winner.

"For Sophie to slot that one in and for Erin to get that finish against a pretty good goalkeeper was big," Brooke said. "We didn't test her a ton, but I thought we got a great finish by Erin and we were proud to just find the one and hold on."

Glenbard South (7-5-2, 4-1) created several chances over the course of the 80 minutes but fell short of finishing.

"We had our chances and we certainly had our corner kicks," Raiders coach Kevin Berner said. "Some of youth is still in not knowing how to finish, knowing how to get the right touch on the ball in the box, but that will come. Now we're seeing the girls put themselves in a position to win."

Sam Schutte had the Raiders' best chances late to tie the game as one of her shots caromed off a defender and another sailed offline via a header off a free kick.

It was a far different match than usual between the two teams. The Warriors had outscored the Raiders 16-2 in the past three meetings. The Raiders still haven't beaten them since a 2013 Class 2A regional championship.

"It was a strong, 50/50 match and if anything, a slight edge to us," Berner said. "It was everything that a first-place conference game should be. We're very proud of the girls and they'll rebound and now get ready for the regional."
