Softball: Ruggles' 1-hitter leads Dundee-Crown past Hampshire

A day after suffering a tough 1-0 loss to District 300 sister school Jacobs, Dundee-Crown senior right-hander Sydney Ruggles came back with a gem - in the circle and at the plate - Wednesday as the Chargers dumped their other D300 sister school, Hampshire, 11-0 in a Fox Valley Conference softball game.

Ruggles fired a 1-hitter at the Whip-Purs (5-6, 2-3), allowing only a fourth-inning single to Melissa Esparza. The Loyola signee struck out 9 and walked 2, needing only 59 pitches to win the five-inning game.

Ruggles also had 2 hits including a double and 3 RBI at the plate. Hannah Gestrich (3 hits, RBI), Cady English (2 hits) and Deanna Origer (2 hits, 2B, 3 RBI) also contributed to the offense for D-C (8-8, 4-2).

CL South 10, Cary-Grove 2: Christina Toniolo did it all for the Gators (10-3, 3-2) in their FVC win. At the plate she had 2 doubles, a home run and 4 RBI. She also was the winning pitcher, going 6 innings and allowing just 4 hits with 5 strikeouts and 4 walks. Also producing offensively for Crystal Lake South were Carly Chovanec (2 hits, RBI), Emily Sulikowski (3 hits, 2 RBI), Baylee Kassel (2 hits, 2B, RBI), Maddie Bush (4 hits, 2B, 3B) and Skylar Olsen (2 hits, RBI). Kelly Johnson had 2 hits for Cary-Grove (9-4, 3-3) and Frankie Cruz added a double.

South Elgin 15, Glenbard East 1: Casey Brennan (2 doubles, 2 RBI), McKenna Eicholz (4 RBI) and Julianna Battaglia (2B, 2 RBI) each had 3 hits to lead South Elgin (7-7, 6-2) to an Upstate Eight Valley win. Adding to the offense for the Storm were Geneva Pollman (2 doubles, 3 RBI), Alivia Doyle (2 hits, 2 RBI), Sidney Strama (2 hits) and Daisy Fuentes (2B, RBI). Sophia Salazar earned the win, allowing 2 hits with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk in 4 innings.

Batavia 25, Larkin 3: Jaelen Lisberg had a home run, a double and 6 RBI as Batavia (9-7, 6-2) rolled to a UEC River win. Kaylan Waldron had 4 hits including a triple, 2 doubles and 2 RBI while Allison Bahlman added 4 hits with a triple, home run and 7 RBI. Cassidy Carby (3 hits, 2 RBI) and Kaitlin Lemmer (3 hits, RBI) also produced for the Bulldogs. Noelle Chaney, one of three Batavia pitchers, was credited with the win. Liz Bowman had 3 hits for Larkin (3-13, 2-7) while Katie Turner added 2 hits, Kiara Villa a double and an RBI and Brynne Farnsworth an RBI.

Geneva 13, Elgin 0: Winning pitcher Emily Viebrock, who threw a 3-hitter, had a home run and a double to lead the Vikings (14-3, 7-1) to a UEC River win. Kate Geary added 2 doubles for Geneva and Isabella Walton added a double. Caitlyn Keith had a double for Elgin.

St. Edward 7, ACC 0: Jessy Kramp threw a 3-hitter with 8 strikeouts and 4 walks and added 3 hits with a home run and 2 RBI at the plate to lead St. Edward (4-7, 2-4) to a Metro Suburban win. Sarah Mendoza added 2 hits for the Green Wave while Ashley Miller had 2 hits with a triple and 2 RBI, Mallory Rejman 2 hits and Chloe Davies 2 hits with 2 RBI. Sammy Martinez had a triple for Aurora Central (15-6, 2-3) and Dani Brown added 2 hits. Izzy Hernandez was the losing pitcher.

DeKalb 13, Jacobs 10: Delaney Garden (2 hits, 3 RBI), Kerri Healy (2 hits), Sarah Lynch (3B, RBI) and Maya Fridae (2B) led Jacobs (7-5) in its nonconference loss.
