Softball: Grossman gets no-hitter

Sarah Grossman, who had to leave the mound on Monday at Barrington after hyperextending her knee, showed no affects of the injury on Tuesday.

In fact, the senior right-hander put an exclamation point on her return by tossing her first career no-hitter in a Mid-Suburban League game.

Grossman struck out 11 in the Pirates' 10-0 five-inning victory.

The Milwaukee School of Engineering recruit now has 115 strikeouts for the season.

"It felt good coming out today knowing we were going be strong both mentally and on the field," said Grossman, now 8-0 "I knew we would get the runs in and I was super excited to get back on the mound with my defense behind me.

"I'm super excited and had full confidence my team would help me make every play."

Maddie Craver enjoyed a second straight 3-for-4 day at the plate with 2 double, 3 RBI and 2 runs. The senior third baseman now has 13 doubles this spring.

"I was just trying to stay loose at the plate and help bring in runs to support Sarah's great pitching," Craver said. "I'm excited for Sarah and her no hitter. We wanted to score a lot of runs for her."

Also helping to score those runs were Rhiann Dick (2-for-3, RBI), Emily Parrott (2-for-3, RBI), and Grace Huff (2-for-4, RBI).

Palatine (12-2, 4-1) was able to end the no hitter with the 10-run rule in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Emily Brinckerhoff got the momentum going with a leadoff pinch hit single up the middle.

Craver singled and after a fielder's choice, Huff got the walk-off single on a line drive to right center.

"I was trying to start us off and get on base so that my team could have the opportunity to score." Brinckerhoff said. "I'm glad that we ended on a high note and we had good energy. I'm really happy for Sarah."

"It was great to see Sarah come back today," said Pirates assistant coach Kristen Proffitt. 'That was a scary moment for everyone (on Monday). Sarah was ready to go today and her pitches looked great. She was hitting her spots and keeping her composure. This is the type of success that Sarah deserves as a senior who works so hard all the time."
