Baseball: Lake Zurich outlasts Warren with Mangano's walk-off

Anthony Mangano hit a walk-off homer leading off the bottom of the ninth inning, and Lake Zurich's baseball team stayed hot on another cold day by edging Warren 1-0 in North Suburban Conference action Tuesday.

Mangano also singled and had half of his team's 4 hits, as the Bears improved to 7-2 and 6-0 in the NSC with their seventh win in a row. Ben Cornelius (5 innings) and Noah DeLuga (4 innings) combined on a 2-hitter for Lake Zurich. Cornelius struck out nine and walked five, while DeLuga had 7 strikeouts and 5 walks.

Evan Hill pitched 8 shutout innings for Warren, striking out 13, walking one and allowing 3 hits. Mikey Kocen doubled for one of the Blue Devils' hits.

Libertyville 7, Lake Forest 0: Illinois-bound Riley Gowens struck out 16 batters and allowed just 1 hit in 6⅔ innings, and the Wildcats cruised in North Suburban Conference play.

Ben Arnold went 3-for-3 with a double and scored 4 runs for Libertyville. Tommy Rigali was 2-for-4 with a double, Luke Plunkett tripled and knocked in 3 runs, and Micah Holzwarth had a single and 2 RBI.

Mundelein 17, Waukegan 7: TJ Yakimisky hit a solo homer and went 2-for-3 for the Mustangs in their North Suburban Conference win.

Ben Holly was 3-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI. Winning pitcher Steven Sanchez and Jonathan Hanscom also doubled in the win. Sanchez threw 3 no-hit innings, striking out seven and walking one, and the lefty did not allow a run.

Stevenson 12, Zion-Benton 0: Hayden Brotz (double, 2 RBI) and Caleb Evans (3 RBI) were both 3-for-3 for the Patriots, who pounded out 15 hits in their North Suburban Conference win.

Stevenson's other offensive contributors included Jack Housinger (2-for-3, double, RBI), Isaiah Hart (2-for-3, 2 doubles), Ryan McElhinny (1-for-2, double, 3 RBI), Jack Jonosa (1-for-1, 2 RBI) and Nick Bonk (1-for-2, double, RBI).

Winning pitcher Michael D'Angelo allowed 1 hit in 3 innings, and Eli Fishbein gave up 1 hit in 2 innings.

Carmel 4, St. Viator 2: Jay Ward pitched a complete game, allowing 1 earned run and 3 hits, and the Corsairs won their East Suburban Catholic Conference opener.

Ward (3-0) struck out five and walked four.

Ben Wiegman (2-for-4 RBI) and Brandon Banker (1-for-3 2 RBI, 1 run) paced the offense for Carmel (7-2).

Maine East 6, Vernon Hills 1: The Cougars lost the Central Suburban League game, as Ashton Schwab struck out 16 batters and allowed 1 unearned run on 5 hits, while walking two.

Tony Brown (2-for-4) doubled twice, and Logan Coty (1-for-3) also had a double for Vernon Hills (6-6-1, 0-3 CSL).
