Boys water polo: Repeat MSL title matchup features Barrington, Buffalo Grove

It will be a rematch from last year in the Mid-Suburban League's boys water polo championship game.

Barrington clinched its spot by defeating visiting Hoffman Estates 11-7, while Buffalo Grove notched another trip to the title game by pulling out an 8-7 double-overtime victory at Prospect.

With 2 divisional games left, both the Broncos and Bison hold 2-game leads over their closest league rivals and have already won twice against those foes (Conant and Hersey).

In Barrington's win, Payton Muhs led the way with 4 goals, and goalie Sam Burrell made 3 saves to go with an assist, a steal and goal. Barrington improved to 15-2 overall and 8-0 in the MSL West.

Buffalo Grove's decision had plenty of drama.

The Bison (19-3, 8-0) trailed in the first OT before getting a last-second goal to tie it and force sudden death. Dan Korol came up with the decisive score from outside the 5 to end it.

Dan Macina led an improving Prospect (9-8, 5-3) team with 3 goals, and Ethan Fransen and Jake Kosinski scored 2 apiece.

Junior Carlos Salgado had 3 goals to pace the Bison, with Kevin Carr and Korol getting 2 apiece and Daniel Verdico scoring once.

Barrington and Buffalo Grove will play for the MSL championship on Wednesday, May 2, at Buffalo Grove.

Conant 7, Fremd 3: The Cougars came up with a win that left them alone in second place in the MSL West at 6-2 (11-5 overall). Fremd (10-8, 4-4) slipped into a tie for fourth place in the division with Schaumburg.

Schaumburg 13, Palatine 6: The visiting Saxons jumped ahead 5-0 after the first quarter and stayed in command the rest of the way. Schaumburg improved to 9-13 and 4-4 in the MSL West, while Palatine dipped to 4-11 and 2-6.

Hersey 16, Elk Grove 8: Elk Grove (6-13, 3-5) got a strong performance from senior Nick Rosenorn (7 goals, 2 assists) but it wasn't enough to keep pace with the visiting Huskies (14-3, 6-2), who are now alone in second place in the MSL East standings.
