Boys volleyball: Stevenson serves up a nice win against visiting Hersey

Host Stevenson accomplished what not many others have been able to do in topping visiting Hersey 25-20, 29-27 in a nonconference boys volleyball test Monday.

Leading the Stevenson attack were Leo Chen (10 kills) and Gavin Meng and Justin Ross (5 kills apiece).

Will Sorenson provided 22 assists and George Lie had a team-best 8 digs for the Patriots (16-4), who over the weekend took top honors in the Lake County Invitational.

Hersey's Jake Mailloux finished 18-for-22 on the attack with 12 kills, and the Huskies also got big hitting efforts from Joe Nugent (13-for-15, 11 kills) and Camran Saeed (13-for-16, 6 kills).

Jakub Migus came up with 32 setting assists for Hersey (10-2). Other big contributors included Corey Irwin (11-for-11 serving, 1 ace), Christian Hong and Saeed (7 digs apiece) and Nugent (team-best 5 blocks).

Palatine d. Lake Zurich: Palatine's boys volleyball team got big hitting efforts from seniors Johnny O'Shea and Leo Donlin in claiming a 25-17, 26-24 victory over visiting Lake Zurich on Monday in a nonconference matchup.

O'Shea was 14-for-16 on the attack for 8 kills, and Donlin finished 11-for-13 with 6 kills.

Conor McGarvey had team-bests of 11 setting assists, 15 digs and also produced an 8-for-8 service effort with an ace.

Providing efficient attack numbers for the Pirates were Bryant Smith (8-for-8, 2 kills) and Connor Nix (3-for-3, 2 kills).

Smith and O'Shea shared the team lead in blocks with 3 apiece, and O'Shea (9 digs) and Camden Hill (8 digs) also had strong defensive games.

Libertyville d. Deerfield: Libertyville improved to 11-1 with a win over Deerfield 20-25, 25-15, 25-23 in nonconference play.

"Deerfield is a nice program with big hitting middles and scrappy defense, they really posed a challenge for us tonight," Libertyville coach Jenny Smith said. "It's hard to beat a team when you make 15 unforced errors in a set (set 1), too. What we did perform well was our blocking scheme as well as terminating from the outside. We weren't as crisp as we like to be, but it's a game we can learn from and we'll avoid making the same mistakes further on in this season."

Setter Carter Schaffnit rolled up 40 assists for Libertyville to go along with 1 kill and 3 digs.

Ryan Winiger had 13 digs while Jack Stevens had 15 kills, 4 blocks and 9 digs.

Brendan Cook led the offense with 16 kills and 1 ace and had 2 blocks and 3 digs. Colin Hawkinson had 11 kills and 8 digs.
