Softball: Barrington, Hersey, Maine West advance

Spring Fling: Barrington senior Catherine McMahon fired a 2-hitter on Monday with a career-best 12 strikeouts as the Fillies advanced to the semifinals of their own Spring Fling with a 3-0 win over Glenbrook North.

Barrington (2-0) will meet Maine West (3-0) in today's semifinals.

The other semifinal features Hersey against Warren.

Both games start at 4:45 p.m. at the Fields of Dreams.

The Fillies scored all their runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Barrington had 4 hits in the game, a double by Jenna Patino (1-for-3) and singles from Abby Jacobsen (1-for-3), Tori Meyer (1-for-3) and Katherine Stagnito (1-for-2).

Glenbrook North slipped to 2-2 and will face Zion Benton's in today's consolation semifinal at 4:45 p.m. The other consolation semi matches Lake Zurich against Deerfield.

Hersey 16, Lake Zurich 15: The defending Mid-Suburban League East champion began its season with 4 home runs to advance to the semifinals of the Spring Fling at Barrington.

Sarah Bailitz put two over the fence while Brianna Luciano and Morgan Breden each had one.

Maine West 8, Zion-Benton 4: The Warriors improved to 3-0 with the win in the quarterfinals of the Spring Fling at Barrington.

Maine West was coming off a season-opening doubleheader sweep of Niles North on Saturday.

The Warriors won Game 1 as sophomore Jessica Steingard struck out 10 in the first 6 innings. Freshman Abigail Gawlinski threw the seventh to complete the shutout.

Warriors senior Bridget Christiansen belted a 3-run double in the Game 2 win.

Buffalo Grove 14, Glenbard East 10: The Bison evened their record at 1-1 with the nonconfernce win in Lombard.

Sophomore Megan Fontanetta was the winning pitcher and also had a double as the Bison rallied for the win with 9 runs in the top of the sixth inning.
