Burlington Central's Mayfield nets MVP honor

Burlington Central junior Patrick Mayfield has earned Daily Herald MVP honors for his recent high school boys basketball performances.

Patrick Mayfield, Burlington Central: This 6-foot-4 guard contributed more and more as the week unfolded. The junior finished with 15 points in a home win over Marengo and scored 23 in a road win at Johnsburg that extended Central's school-record winning streak to 20 games and clinched the Kishwaukee River Conference title outright. Though the streak was snapped the following night in a 64-62 loss at Batavia, Mayfield led the Rockets with a career-best 34 points, capped by 11 in the fourth quarter.

Alec Novak, Grayslake Central: The senior guard came up with career-best 28 points in a key rivalry game, as the Rams topped Grayslake North 63-50. Novak had 22 of his points in the second half as Grayslake Central snapped a four-game skid.

James Peterkin, Glenbard East: Glenbard East suddenly got hot and this strong 6-foot-4 senior forward was a big reason why. Peterkin scored 18 points with 11 rebounds, 2 blocks in a 65-47 nonconference win over Elk Grove. He followed that with 20 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks in an 88-79 Upstate Eight Valley victory at West Chicago.

Anthony Spann, Barrington: The senior guard came up with the big game his team needed to wrap up a share of the Mid-Suburban West championship and a spot in the MSL title game. Spann finished with a game-high 18 points, which included 10-for-12 from the foul line, as the host Broncos finished league play with a 53-43 victory against Fremd.
