Lake Zurich's Enters grabs a roster spot at La Crosse

The "best hands" on Lake Zurich's Class 7A state runner-up football team will be used to catch footballs for Wisconsin-La Crosse in the future.

That's where Matthijs Enters announced he will continue his football career.

"Matthijs had the best hands on the team," said Lake Zurich coach Luke Mertens after the season. "His acrobatic catches will go down in Lake Zurich football folk lore for years to come. Playing a position in tight end that isn't usually known for its playmaking ability, Enters was second on the team in receptions (38) and receiving yards (677) and tied for first in receiving touchdowns (9)."

A rare two-way player, Enters also made big plays on defense as a linebacker in third-down situations.

At La Crosse, he'll have at least one familiar face on the sidelines, as Bears quarterback Evan Lewandowski also recently committed to the program.

Other recent football commitments include Grant's Mike Huff (Carthage), Antioch's Kevin Fox (Carroll University), Grayslake North's Garrick McGregor (Rockford College), Grayslake North's Virgil Cannon (Wheaton College) and Antioch's Drew Porter (Wisconsin-Whitewater).

Augustana senior Kyle Hucker (Wauconda) was part of the 4x400 unit that was second in 3:19.63 at the Spartan Invitational in Dubuque, Iowa. Augustana was third to Wisconsin-Platteville and Dubuque in the nine-team field.

Hucker was also fourth in the 200-meter run in 23.11.

Men's lacrosse

Augustana junior Brian Hinsberger (Lake Zurich) is one of eight returning starters for the Vikings, who open their season this week with three matches.

Hinsberger earned the team's Best Defensive Player award last season when he was a second-team All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin selection. He played in 13 games with 12 starts, collecting 27 ground balls, 15 turnovers, 1 goal and 1 assist.

Men's basketball

Villanova junior Jalen Brunson (Stevenson) is one of 30 players on the Atlanta Tipoff Club's late season team competing to receive the 50th Citizen Naismith Trophy.

From this list, 10 semifinalists will be revealed on Feb. 28, and only those 10 players are eligible for the group of four finalists, which will be released in mid-March.

Fans once again will be able vote for their favorite player by visiting naismithtrophy.com/vote between March 19-30 to cast their ballot, and the fan component counts for 5 percent of the overall final vote.

The 50th Citizen Naismith Trophy will be awarded on April 1 in San Antonio, during the NCAA Men's Final Four.

"The players on the midseason team have displayed the attributes of what it'll take to advance into the next round. However, there are still tremendous candidates remaining, and the next two weeks will be intensely competitive," said Eric Oberman, executive director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club. "We look forward to watching them compete for the 50th Citizen Naismith Trophy, and we are excited to continue our legacy of honoring college basketball's top players during this celebratory season."

Women's basketball

DePauw freshman Claire Keefe (Libertyville) had 5 rebounds as the seventh-ranked Tigers rallied from a 13-point third-quarter deficit to top Kenyon 61-49. DePauw (23-1, 15-0) won a sixth North Coast Athletic Conference championship in seven seasons.

Niro III to Northwestern

Barrington senior quarterback Ray Niro III is committed to play football for Northwestern. He was 100-of-150 for 1,565 yards and 12 touchdowns passing and ran 190 times for 2,023 yards and 30 touchdowns. He also caught a touchdown pass and had a 36.3 punting average. "Ray is one of the most dynamic players I have been around in 22 years of coaching," said Barrington coach Joe Sanchez after the season. "Every time he had the ball, you always held your breath because you might see something that has never been done before."
