Conant's Amato wins sectional title at Larkin

Conant had a champion in junior Nicky Amato and advanced a total of three wrestlers to the Class 3A state tournament with performances in the Larkin sectional Saturday.

Amato won his 138-pound semifinal matchup with Glenbard West's Will Vesevick 6-5 before gaining an 8-2 decision over St. Charles East's Niko Derain in the championship matchup.

Also advancing for the Cougars were Alex Giuliano and Cormac Kane.

At 120 pounds, Giuliano won by 8-4 decision against Glenbard East's Reese Martin in the third-place match.

Kane made it to the championship at 170 pounds, where unbeaten Abe Assad of Glenbard North won 4-0.

Maine West will be represented downstate by Arsalan Afshar and Jake Bellizzi.

At 132 pounds, Afshar took second place, and Schaumburg's only state qualifier, Jack Lingle, took third.

Belizzi fought through wrestlebacks to grab third place at 195 pounds.

Elk Grove senior Anthony Greco also earned a trip downstate by finishing fourth at 285 pounds.
