Girsl volleyball: Fremd nets third at Lake Park Invite

Playing its final matches of the regular season before returning home for Class 4A regional play on Tuesday, Fremd's girls volleyball team went 4-1 to take third place at the Lake Park Invite on Saturday.

The Vikings (26-10) went 3-0 in pool play on Friday night with three-set wins over Conant and Warren and a two-set triumph over Glenbrook South.

The Mid-Suburban West champs then lost to Glenbard North in three sets on Saturday and won the third-place match in two sets over host Lake Park.

Warren defeated Dundee-Crown for the championship 25-20, 25-20.

Mid-Suburban League champion Hersey finished off its regular season with a 3-2 record at the invite.

The Huskies defeated Buffalo Grove (25-23,18-25, 15-13) and lost to Lake Park (25-20, 23-25, 15-6) on Friday before defeating Bartlett 25-14 25-7 and Glenbard North 25-23 25-12 on Saturday with a loss to Dundee-Crown (23-25, 25-21, 15-13).

Hersey (27-7) won a record 12th MSL crown with a two -set win at Fremd on Thursday night.

"We experienced a little letdown playing less than 24 hours after the conference championship," said Hersey coach Nancy Lill. "It was an exhausting week that we finished on a high note heading into the playoffs."

Mid-Suburban East Player of the Year Kati Kaburov put down a team-high 40 kills followed by Amy Morgan (22), Janine Boyan (18), Juliette van den Herik (11), Hayley Martin (11), Alessia Olhava (7) and Emma Strozewski (4).

Leading the Huskies in blocks were van den Herik (12) and Kaburov (8) while serving leaders were Kaburov (57-57, 8 aces), Julia Coniglio (45-46, 7 aces) and Morgan (64-65, 7 aces).

Strozewski (143-145, 58 assists), Olhava (144-148, 31 assists) and Coniglio (16-16, 9 assists) set the attack while the back row was led by Coniglio (61 digs), Kaburov (54) and Olhava (48).

Buffalo Grove (16-15) went 2-3 in the invite, getting wins over Dundee-Crown on Friday and Bartlett on Friday.

The Bison defeated the Hawks 25-21, 25-15 with the attack being led by Lauren Horvath (7 kills), Mary Nowlan (5 kills), Claire Ferriss (5 kills), Maggie Steckert (3) and Shannon Coglianese (3).

Olivia Morini served 3 aces and Steckert handed out 20 assists.

The back row was led by Steckert (7 digs) and Riley Cross (6).

Lyons tournament: Prospect (9-25) went 1-4 at the invite, getting win over Thornton (25-13, 25-15).

Meghan Meredith led the Knights with 6 aces on the day while Mia Farraday, Grace Cacini and Gianna Russo each had 4.

Cacini (26 kills) and Meredith (25 kills) were top attackers with Meredith (11) and Sloane Petlak (5) leading in blocks.

The back row was paced by Farraday (43 digs), Cacini (27), Sarah Skaggs (25) and Russo (15) while setter Casey Acosta handed out with 53 assists with 13 digs.
