Girls tennis: Fremd's Bodensteiner/Smiarowska advance to third round

Fremd seniors Kate Bodensteiner and Julia Smiarowska have earned a spot in Friday's third round of Class 2A championship-bracket doubles play in the high school girls tennis state tournament.

The senior tandem first topped Huntley's Allison Simons and Merritt Whiteside without losing a game. They followed with a win just as dominant in the second round, handling Hinsdale Central's Amanda Cashman and Alexis Hamdan 6-0, 6-0.

In singles play, both Fremd junior Diya Matta and freshman Kyra Emmanouilidis won their first-round matches.

Matta topped Rockford Boylan's Natalie Muldowney 6-0, 6-2, and Emmanouilidis prevailed 7-5, 6-1 against Quincy's Olivia Clayton.

Matta and Emmanouilidis both dropped their second-round matches in the championship bracket to higher-seeded opponents.

Matta went on to win a second-round consolation bracket 6-1, 6-1 against Buffalo Grove's Kina Tamai, while Emmanouilidis bowed out with a 7-5, 6-0 loss to Warren's Sabrina Mella.

Sisters Elsie and Kellie Ha dropped their first-round championship bracket match but answered with a 7-6 (2), 7-5 victory against Lake Park's Nina Pasquini & Maeve Casey before bowing out with a second-round consolation setback.

Bodensteiner/Smiarowska's next foe as the tournament continues Friday is Monique Brual/Samara Michael of Highland Park. That match will be played at Wheeling.

The early returns have Fremd in sixth place in the team standings with 10 points. Highland Park has the tournament lead with 14, followed by Hinsdale South, Glenbard West and Stevenson tied for second with 12.

Tamai was a winner in her first-round consolation match, claiming a hard-fought 6-4, 2-6, 10-6 decision against Geneva's Caroline Lahey.

Palatine's Kanae Kawai picked up a consolation victory over Stevenson's Athena Kolli before falling in second-round consolation action.

Barrington's Sara Amano and Nidhi Jha rolled past their first-round foe in the championship bracket but fell in the second round. They bounced back, however, with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Marist's Caitlyn Foggie/Isabella Rabianski in a second-round consolation matchup.

Also still playing for the Fillies are Niyanthi Puliyala and Kathleen Tomasian, who dropped their opening-round match but bounced back with consecutive consolation victories.

In Class 1A, St. Viator's Patricia Dizon/Greta Zimmerman scored a pair of decisive wins in the championship bracket. They started with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Sycamore's Maggie McConnaughay/Maddie Weaver and followed that with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over St. Thomas More's Caroline Waddell/Kayley Schacht.

The tournament continues at various Mid-Suburban League sites Friday, with the championship quarterfinals in both 1A and 2A slated for Buffalo Grove in the afternoon following the completion of third-round advancement.

The semifinals and finals will also be held at Buffalo Grove beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.
