Boys soccer: St. Edward opens postseason with shutout win

St. Edward's boys soccer team opened its pursuit of a Class 1A state championship with a 7-0 win over Kirkland Hiawatha in the opening round of the Genoa-Kingston regional.

The Green Wave (22-1-0) scored all 7 goals in the first half with AJ Franklin netting a hat trick.

Also scoring for St. Edward were Jackson Godfrey, Will Gaston, Josh Johansen and Uriel Carachure. Johansen also had 2 assists as did Zach Olenek. Gaston also added an assist.

Evan Sajtar spent 40 minutes in goal for the Wave but wasn't tested. In the final 20 minutes, Cameron Kruk made 3 saves to preserve the shutout.

St. Edward will play for the regional title at 1 p.m. Saturday against the winner of Wednesday's game between G-K and Johnsburg.

At ACC: Aurora Central Catholic defeated Aurora Christian 5-1 and Harvest Christian downed Westminster Christian 3-2 in the semifinals of the Class 1A ACC regional. In the Harvest win, the Lions got goals from Eric Oehler, Johnny Constante and Zach Floyd, who also had 2 assists. The Chargers and Lions (8-6-2) will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday for the regional title.

South Elgin 1, Rockford Guilford 1: Royce Robinson scored South Elgin's goal in this nonconference tie.

Hampshire 3, McHenry 0: Braeden Frenette, Kobe Frenette and Jose Marquez scored goals for Hampshire (11-7-3, 3-4-1) in a Fox Valley Conference win. Jason Polletta and Andrew Krajecki combined for 7 saves in goal for the shutout.
