Girls volleyball: Fremd finishes off Barrington in three sets

After dropping the first set, Fremd's girls volleyball team charged back with authoritative wins in the next two sets to post a 20-25, 25-15, 25-16 win against Barrington on Tuesday night in Mid-Suburban West play.

The host Vikings evened their record at 5-5 and 1-1 while Barrington is 7-4 and 1-1.

Jess Rizzo (31-31, 10 kills), Heidi Sayre (20-21 8 kills) and Peyton Hooker (15-15, 5 kills) led the Vikings' attack which was set by senior Sarah Straup (26 assists).

Jess Mazur led the defending MSL champs with 3 aces while Maddie Aichinger and Samantha Smith each had two. Mazur also led with 3 blocks; Hooker had 2 and Straup 1.

The Fillies were led by Andi Capel (9 kills, 12 digs), Peyton Tilly (10 kills, 1 ace), Baily Madrzyk (8 kills) and Suzana Andrade de Oliveira (12 digs, 2 aces).

Hersey d. Buffalo Grove: Sophomore Kati Kaburov put down 14 kills as defending divisional champion Hersey (7-3, 2-0) won the MSL East match 25-22, 23-25, 25-13 in Arlington Heights.

Amy Morgan (6 kills), Hayley Martin (5) and Alessia Olhava (4) were next in line, while Olhava (15 assists) and Emma Strozewski (11 assists) handled the setting.

Kaburov, Strozewski and Molly Twohig each served aces for Hersey while Katie Moreno had 2.

Twohig led the back row with 24 digs and Juliette VanDenHerik was tops in blocks with 5.

Claire Ferris (12 kills) and Nicole Langer (9) paced the attack for BG (7-4, 1-1) set by Maggie Streckert (31 assists). Riley Cross' 10 digs were tops for the Bison followed by Ferris (8) and Nina Masciopinto (6) while Mary Nowlan had 3 blocks.

Palatine d. Conant: Haley Holz (12 kills), Jillian Smith (4), Karina Szafraniec (3) and Beverly Ryan (2) led the attack for visiting Palatine (6-3, 1-1), which won the MSL West match 25-14, 25-19. Holz also served 4 aces while Allison Aldag collected 23 assists. Katie Lindert's 15 digs led the Pirates' back-row effort.

Yuri Hara had 6 kills while Chikere Odoucha and Kristina Loznjakovic added 4 apiece for Conant (5-10, 1-1).

Amanda Klingsporn had 17 digs and Fiona Fennelly handed out 10 assists.

Schaumburg d. Hoffman Estates: Host Schaumburg (6-4, 2-0) topped the Hawks 25-6, 25-16 as Morgan Sterrett (8 kills, 1 ace, 1 block), Dana Kiszkowski (5 kills, 1 block, 1 ace), Michelle Condotti (21 assists, 2 blocks), Gabby Paelmo (11 digs) and Ari Doroskin (4 kills, 2 blocks, 2 aces) helped lead the way.

Kathleen Gueco handed out 5 assists for Hoffman (0-8, 0-2) while Ashley Poland had 6 digs.

Meadows d. Elk Grove: Eleanor Errico (6 kills), Elise Kowalski (5), Natalie Klancnik (5) and Natale Anderson (4) led host Meadows (6-10, 1-10) in a 25-19, 25-13 MSL East win.

Klancnik (41-41) handed out 11 assists while Mallory King was 18-of-19 with 10 assist. Anderson had 8 digs and 2 aces while and Macie Robinson 7 digs and 2 aces.

Emma Slattery (3 kills) and Jessica Deering (2) led the attack for EG (1-8, 0-2) which was set by Lexi Chirbas (4 assists).

St. Viator d. Nazareth Academy: Catherine Hickey put down 13 kills and Michaela Mueller handed out 22 assists as the visiting Lions (13-4, 1-1) won 25-18, 25-16 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. Other top attackers for St. Viator were Kate Nottoli (4 kills), Rina Rodriguez (3) and Kendall Claffey (2).

Rodriquez and Hickey each served 3 aces and Carrie Leazer had 13 digs followed by Hickey (11). Nottoli led the 5 blocks.
