Girls cross country: Vernon runs to repeat victory in Art Campbell Invite

Vernon Hills' girls cross country team placed five runners in the top 15 and captured the Lake County Art Campbell invite at Lakewood Forest Preserve for the second year in a row Wednesday.

Libertyville's Melissa Manetsch won the race in 18:02.1, easily ahead of runner-up Isabelle Sparreo of Stevenson (18:42.8). Vernon Hills' Lauren Katz was third (18:45.6), Grant's Danielle Osmon took fourth (18:49.3) and Round Lake's Fatima Giron was fifth (18:50.1).

The top 10 also included Lakes' Olivia Schmitt (19:02.2), Vernon Hills' Caroline Sear (19:07.9), Stevenson's Natalie Sorenson (19:18.3), Vernon Hills' Payton Makowskyj (19:21.2) and Libertyville's Nora Tucker (19:22.5).

Vernon Hills (28) edged Stevenson (30) for the title. Libertyville (37), Lakes (43) and Grant (73) rounded out the top five.

Boys cross county

Lake County invite: At Lakewood Forest Preserve, Barrington's Nick Laning (15:12.6) won the race ahead of Libertyville's Alex Tam (15:15.4).

Mundelein's Michael Parduhn (15:28.2) and Stevenson's Brett Lucas (15:31.4) finished third and fourth, respectively, and Mundelein's Dillon Blake was fifth (15:35.1).

Mundelein (33) was the team champion with Barrington (87) second and Stevenson (107) third.
