Boys water polo: Barrington bows out with 1-goal loss to Fenwick

A Mid-Suburban League boys water polo team has yet to win a state quarterfinal game.

But Barrington sure came close to being the first.

Fenwick edged the Broncos 10-9 on Friday at Stevenson High School in the first of Friday's state tournament matchups.

After the game was tied 3-3 at the half, the Mid-Suburban League champs outscored the Friars 4-1 in the third quarter to take a 7-4 lead.

Fenwick finished by outscoring Barrington 6-2 in the fourth quarter. The Friars advance to an 11:30 a.m. Saturday semifinal against New Trier, which topped Lyons Township 8-5.

The outcome ends the best season in Barrington boys water polo history under coaches Scott Krasinski and Rob Emary. The Broncos finished 29-4 in winning the MSL and advancing to state for the second time in the last three seasons.

Senior Kyle Mitchell led the scoring effort for Barrington with 4 goals. John Fischer was a force, finishing with 3 goals and a team-best 4 assists.

Senior Colin O'Leary had 1 goal, sophomore Steven Fischer had 1 goal, senior Mitch Gavars had an assist and senior goalie Jack Krieps was credited with 11 saves.

Matt Hoban (4 goals) and Ivan Soto (3) led the scoring for Fenwick (25-8).

In Friday's other quarterfinals, Stevenson handled Lincoln-Way East 18-9 and Naperville Central topped St. Ignatius 18-2. The Patriots (34-0) and Redhawks (28-5) meet at 12:45 p.m. in the semifinals, a matchup of last year's title-game competitors.

The third-place game, featuring the losers of the semifinals, will be played at 5 p.m., and the semifinal winners will meet in the championship at 8 p.m.
