College baseball: Elgin CC on brink of World Series berth

The Elgin Community College baseball team won the Region IV District B Division III championship over the weekend, defeating College of DuPage 17-8 in Sunday's championship game.

The Spartans (29-21) will host Delta College (32-20) of Michigan this weekend in the District B finals.

In Sunday's win, Region IV MVP Tyler Lowe led ECC with 3 hits including a double and a home run. Also contributing to the offense were Rhett Wojkovich (2 hits, 2B, 3 RBI), Will Drake (3B, 4 RBI), Tanner Smith (2 hits, RBI), Dan Lenz (2 RBI), Austin Jacox, Joe Laudont (3 hits, RBI) and Steve Busby (3 hits, 2B, 3 RBI).

Steven De la Torriente came out of the bullpen to pitch the final 6 ⅔ innings, allowing 4 hits and no earned runs with 5 strikeouts and no walks.

ECC coach Bill Angelo was also named Region IV Coach of the Year.

The Spartans' series against Delta will be a best of 3, with games scheduled for noon and 3:30 p.m. Saturday and the if necessary game at noon Sunday.

The district champion earns an automatic bid to the NJCAA Division III World Series May 27-June 1 in Greeneville, Tenn.
