Baseball: Kmet fans 10 as St. Viator splits with Joliet Catholic

St. Viator senior Cole Kmet took command in the first game Saturday as the Lions' baseball team split an East Suburban Catholic Conference doubleheader against visiting Joliet Catholic.

Kmet tossed a complete game in a 3-0 St. Viator victory, striking out 10 and allowing 3 hits (all singles) and a walk.

The Lions got all their scoring in the sixth inning, on a fielder's choice, a balk and an RBI single from Casey Kmet.

In the second game, a 10-0 Lions loss, St. Viator (17-13) had hits from Casey Kmet, John Finnegan and Joe Sarnello.

Hoffman Estates 7, Rockford Boylan 0: Jon Keller's second-inning grand slam was more than enough offense as the host Hawks won in nonconference play.

Lucas Barnes had a solo homer and Josh Magers and Dylan Bloom doubled for the Hawks (10-14).

Barnes (3 IP, 3 hits) got the win and Kurt Foy (4 IP, 3 hits) earned save.

Barrington 6, Lake Forest 4: Jeff Korus, Will Yorton and Blake Gosswein each had 2 hits to help the visiting Broncos outscore the Scouts in nonconference action.

Korus, Yorton and Eric Kozlowski had doubles and Sean Davis tripled for Barrington (25-7), which got solid efforts from winning pitcher Nick Gardner and reliever Ricky Aievoli (save).

Buffalo Grove 6, Grant 1: John Carpinelli finished 3-for-4 with a triple to lead an 11-hit effort as the host Bison picked up a nonconference win.

Leo Rule finished 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and Riley Rundquest went 2-for-4 for Buffalo Grove (24-3-1). Rule and Rundquist also stole 2 bases apiece.

Carpinelli pitched the first 5 innings, allowing just 1 hit and no runs to get the win.

Warren 4, Wheeling 2: The visiting Wildcats got a solo homer from Kyle Bullock but could manage a total of 5 hits against two Warren pitchers. Mike Wiase had 2 of them, Jack Splett had a double and Cade Kaplan drove in 1 run as Wheeling (13-16-1) suffered a nonconference loss.

Tanner Dyer went 4-for-4 with a double and Parker Reinhard homered for Warren (23-8).

Dundee-Crown 8, Hersey 7: The visiting Huskies put together a 5-run seventh-inning rally, capped by a grand slam from Tom Barnes with one out, but still came up a run short in nonconference action.

Mark Losacco and Barnes both had 2 hits, and AJ Ceffalio doubled for Hersey (8-18-1).

Zach Han doubled and drove in 3 runs for D-C (12-15).

Lockport 11, Elk Grove 1 (6 inn.): The host Porters produced 9 hits, including 2 doubles from Ryne Travis, and took advantage of 5 walks and 3 Grens errors in the nonconference matchup.

Ryne Singsank had 2 hits and Austin Brown drove in the run for Elk Grove (12-16).

Streamwood 9, Schaumburg 8: The visiting Sabres came back from an 8-4 deficit, scoring 5 runs over the final two inning to claim a nonconference win.

Jaeden Bruner, Jakob Kolodziej (2 hits) and Tommy Larsen doubled for Schaumburg (7-20).

Lake Park 9, Rolling Meadows 1: Justin Thompson, Matt Lothery and Emmett Dessimoz had the only hits for the visiting Mustangs (4-21) in a nonconference loss.

Mundelein 12, Fremd 1 (5 inn.): Tom Cermak and Tommy Wingen both doubled for host Fremd (15-14), but those were the only hits in a nonconference loss for the Vikes.
