Girls track and field: Kaneland wins Class 2A sectional title

Powered by three individual champions and a relay win, the Kaneland girls track and field team scored 97 points Friday night to win the Class 2A Genoa-Kingston sectional championship.

The Knights outdistanced Rockford Boylan (88 points) and Sterling (87) for the title.

Winning sectional championships for Kaneland were junior Cierra Kuipers in the pole vault, senior Maddie Kiefer in the triple jump and freshman Lesley Viveros in the 400-meter dash. The Knights' 400 relay team also took first place.

Kaneland also qualified for the state finals next weekend in Charleston in the 1,600 relay. Additionally, senior Nicole Sreenan will compete at state after finishing third in the 100 and 200 dashes. Freshman Rachel Richtman will also make the trip downstate after finishing third in the 1,600 run.

Burlington Central senior Megan Safranski finished second in the 3,200 to advance, as did Rockets' junior Chloe Bilyk, who finished fifth in the 300 low hurdles but made state qualifying time.

Class 3A at Antioch: In the Class 3A sectional at Antioch that concluded late Thursday night, Huntley finished third as a team and qualified several individuals for state as well as its 800-meter relay team. Red Raiders junior Tyra Miller won the 100 high hurdles and was second in the 300 low hurdles, while her junior teammate McKenzie Kirch won the high jump. Daryn Davis and Kendall Only will compete at state in the triple jump and Davis also advanced in the 100 high hurdles. Jacobs' Kyra Cabusao finished second in the shot put to advance while Crystal Lake South senior Caitlin Bruzzini won the 3,200-meter run. She also advanced in the 1,600 run. Senior Cailey Ciezadio advanced in the 200 dash for the Gators as well.

Class 1A at Oregon: St. Edward junior Bella Uscilla won both the 100 and 200 dashes to advance to Charleston next weekend. Harvest Christian junior Nygia Pollard also advanced in two events, winning the 3,200 and placing second in the 1,600. Lions' sophomore Hope Mylin finished second in the 100 high hurdles to advance and Harvest will also send its 3,200 relay team to state after it finished third but made state qualifying time.

Class 1A at Seneca: Aurora Christian freshman Alyssa Busker finished second in the 100-meter dash to advance to state. The Eagles also qualified their 800 relay team, which finished second.
