Girls soccer: Geneva wins again
Geneva's girls soccer capped off one of the better regular seasons in recent memory in the Fox Valley with a 4-1 win over Wheaton Academy.
The co-Upstate Eight River champs finished 18-1-1, Geneva's best record since 2004 when it finished third at state and best in the era of head coach Megan Owens. It's good to note that the Vikings' only loss came at the hands of 3-time defending state champion New Trier (1-0) while the tie came in a scoreless bout against St. Charles North on May 1.
Wheaton Academy was just the sixth team to score on Geneva, which allowed 8 goals in 20 games to go along with 14 shutouts. But Geneva had too much firepower, as Maddy Rapach-Lagowski, Jaden Ciesielski, Stephanie Howe all scored unassisted goals against the Warriors while Katie Niermann helped Jenna Dominguez cap the scoring in the final minute. Keeper Katie Montgomery notched 5 saves.
The Vikings enter the postseason in Class 3A as the top seed in the Hoffman Estates sectional and will play the winner of a play-in No. 16. Lake Park and No. 17 Addison Trail next Tuesday.
Burlington Central 8, Hampshire 0: Anna McMahon was an assist machine in a big win for the Rockets (19-2-2). McMahon totaled 6 assists and 1 goal to topple rival Hampshire on Rocket Hill. Kyrsten Pellikan and Abbi Ciganek both collected 2 goals while Alexis Rosa Megan Majewski and Elizabeth Gousios also added goals. Erin Rafferty earned a shutout in goal despite no saves made.
