Baseball: Buffalo Grove bounces back against Prospect

Buffalo Grove's baseball team tightened up the Mid-Suburban East race by pounding out 13 hits in an 11-1, 5-inning victory over visiting Prospect on Thursday.

Prospect (16-9, 12-2) still holds a 1-game lead over the Bison in the division, and both teams have two games remaining after splitting their head-to-head matchups this week.

Buffalo Grove is scheduled to play at Conant on Friday and finish up at home on Monday against Fremd.

Prospect, which defeated BG on Monday, is scheduled to play at Palatine on Friday and will wrap by hosting Schaumburg on Monday.

Zach Fricke had a grand slam in a 5-run third inning and drove in 5 runs for the Bison (22-3-1, 11-3). Mac Camardo went 3-for-3 and Tyler Rundquist was 2-for-2 with 2 RBI.

Rio Komatani and Chase Marsh had doubles for the Bison, and John Carpinelli tripled.

John Lundgren allowed 3 hits and struck out 7 to earn the win.

Anthony Catalano accounted for Prospect's scoring with a third-inning solo homer.

St. Viator 11, Elgin Academy 1 (5 inn.): Senior Cole Kmet had a grand slam as the host Lions rolled in nonconference play.

Kmet finished 2-for-4 with 6 RBI. Brett DeSelm had a pair of hits, and Casey Kmet doubled and drew two walks out of the leadoff spot for St. Viator (16-12).

Sean McAteer earned the win after allowing a single hit through 4 innings.

Hersey 9, Rolling Meadows: The Huskies got a double and a triple from Nick Wiley and used a 5-run fourth inning to pull away from the host Mustangs in MSL East action.

Tyler Haffey finished 3-for-5 with a triple for Hersey (8-16-1, 4-10), and Alberto Garcia went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and 3 RBI.

Mark Losacco allowed 5 hits with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks in 6⅔ inning to get the win.

Marco Perez doubled twice for Rolling Meadows (4-19, 2-12).

Wheeling 5, Elk Grove 2: The visiting Wildcats trailed 2-1 after the fifth inning but finished strong with a 3-run sixth and a 1-run seventh to earn an MSL East road win.

Wheeling tied it on a fielder's choice in the sixth and took a 2-run lead when a hard-hit ball by D.J. Godlewski led to a 2-run error.

Andy Shover added an RBI single for Wheeling (13-14-1, 6-8) in the seventh inning.

Mike Wiase and Shover finished with 2 hits apiece and Brian Maloney walked twice and doubled for the Wildcats.

Ryan Uehara had 2 hits for Elk Grove (12-14, 7-7), and Nick Hofmann and Justin Post drove in the runs.

Palatine 2, Fremd 1: The host Vikings scored the decisive run in the bottom of the seventh inning on an error.

Evan Daly was the winning pitcher; he allowed 8 hits but struck out seven in a complete-game effort. John Weber had a pair of hits for the Pirates (15-12, 8-6).

Luke Seidel finished 4-for-4 with a double for Fremd (14-13, 8-6).

Hoffman Estates 7, Barrington 3: In the continuation of Wednesday's suspended game, the visiting Hawks scored 4 runs in the sixth inning for the finishing touches on an MSL West win.

Lucas Barnes drove in a run in the sixth with a single, and Dylan Bloom drove in 2 with a double for Hoffman Estates (8-14, 7-7). Barnes, Bloom and Tom Curcio each finished with 2 hits, and Sam Herbert allowed only an unearned run in his 3 inning Thursday to make a winner of starter Jon Keller.

MSL West champ Barrington (23-7, 13-1) suffered its first loss in the MSL as Blake Gosswein and Mikey Owlsey both had 2 hits.

Conant 11, Schaumburg 3: C.J. Deshazer tripled, finishing 2-for-5 with 2 RBI as Conant won a road game in the MSL West.

Tyler Hedmen doubled and drove in 3 runs for the Cougars (10-17, 5-9) and Mason Sykes doubled, walked twice and drove in 3 more. Joe Kawalek had 2 RBI as reliever Colin Broeker earned the win.

Tommy Larson had a pair of hits for the Saxons (6-19, 1-13).

Leyden 8, Addison Trail 3: This West Suburban Gold matchup was scoreless through 7 innings before both teams had 3 runs in the ninth inning, setting the stage for a 5-run 11th-inning breakthrough for visiting Leyden.

Justin Borges had a 2-run double in the 11th, Nico Sanchez doubled and drove in another run and Justin Aleman had a run-scoring single.

Leyden, which improved to 16-4, got 8⅔ innings from Michael Wilms. Kevin Nevarez tossed 2 inning and got the win, and Johnny Auge got the final out and was awarded a save.

Vernon Hills 7, Maine West 1: Matty Mustari had 2 hits but host Maine West (8-17) couldn't get much going against the Cougars in Central Suburban North play.
