Girls soccer: Jacobs defeats Dundee-Crown

After taking an early first half lead, the Jacobs girls soccer team needed a second-half rally to defeat Dundee-Crown 6-3 in Fox Valley Conference action Tuesday night in Carpentersville.

The regular season finale for both teams was the first time in 4 years that the Golden Eagles have defeated the Chargers in girls soccer.

"I think it's huge. A lot of the girls who have been here since freshman year know how difficult it is to get a win from Dundee-Crown," said Jacobs assistant coach Curt Dedic.

D-C's Rylee Quillen tied the game at 3 with 3:12 left in the first half. Jacobs keeper Emily Pasetes (8 saves) blocked a shot by Katelyn Skibinski, but before she could clear the net, Quillen kicked the ball across the goal line.

The scored remained knotted for the next 25 minutes of play.

Sophomore Golden Eagle Hannah Mohan broke the tie in the 61st minute with her second goal of the game.

On a corner kick, teammate Kelsey Medina booted the ball in front of the Chargers' net. Mohan knocked it in to put Jacobs ahead for good, 4-3.

"Kelsey crossed it in on a wonderful cross and then it kind of got deflected around," Mohan said. "I saw it there and I remembered to aim low and went for the corner."

A Karissa Gottardo goal put Jacobs (10-7, 5-3) up by 2 with 15:23 left to play. Cassie Kowalski finished the Golden Eagles' scoring, finding the back of net in the game's 73rd minute.

"I think it speaks of leadership," Dedic said of his team's second half effort. "We came out after half and our captains (Gottardo, Madison Belo and Heather Hoffman) really rallied us. They brought this team up and said 'hey we've got to talk and we've got to work together.' "

D-C (9-9, 4-4) played catch-up throughout the first half.

Braylin Mensik put the Chargers on the scoreboard with a goal 15 minutes into the half. A minute later, Mohan restored Jacobs' lead to 2 goals, 3-1. She took a header from Gottardo and booted the ball in from just outside the penalty box.

D-C's Anna Kielthyka took a pass at midfield and outpacing Jacobs defenders, dribbled the ball down field and got a shot past Pasetes to pull her team within 3-2 at the 23:36 mark of the first half. A second Kielthyka goal that would have tied the game was waved off due to an offside penalty.

"We made a great comeback - tied it 3 to make it interesting, I think we just ran out of gas." said D-C coach Sebastian Falinski. "Credit to Jacobs, they came out and they did a lot of good things."
