Softball: Peterson places third on IHSA coaches for wins

Just two days after Illinois' second-winningest coach of all time, Ken Grams of Elk Grove, won his 900th softball game, his Mid-Suburban League counterpart Perry Peterson of Barrington moved right behind him on the list.

Peterson moved into the third spot by winning his 765th game, a 13-0 five-inning shutout at Rolling Meadows on Thursday.

He moved ahead of Jane Grebner of Willamsville, who won 764 games from 1985 to 2015.

Peterson now has a career record of 765-181 since his first season at St. Viator in 1992, when he was 16-9 before beginning at Barrington in 1993.

The all-time leader is St. Joseph-Ogden coach Randy Wolken, who has won 1,001 games since 1980.

Sophomore Tori Meyer (5-0) threw a 4-hitter with 12 strikeouts for the Fillies, who improved to 23-1 and 11-0 in the MSL West.

Barrington's 20-hit attack was led by Carly Kordich (3-for-4), Abbey Jacobsen (3-for-4, double), Jenna Patino (3-for-4, double), Julia Kozar (2-for-4), Kendall Peterson (2-for-4, double), Haley Luczak (2-for-4), Rachel Krzysko (2-for-4) and Meyer (2-for-4).

Amanda Elkins (2-for-3), Stephanie Thompson (1-for-2, double) and Caroline Slowik (1-for-2) led the attack for the Mustangs (6-19, 1-10).

Palatine 15, Buffalo Grove 1 (5 inn): Visiting Palatine (18-5, 9-2) earned the MSL West win behind junior Maddie Craver (3-0), who had 6 strikeouts and also went 3-for-5 with an RBI and 1 run.

Other top hitters for the Pirates were freshman Chase Friel (4-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBI), sophomore Amanda Stanczuk (3-for-4, 3 RBI, 1 run) and junior Brittany Padden (3-for-4, 3 runs, RBI, walk).

All 21 of the Pirates' hits were singles and they scored 8 runs in the second inning.

"It's great having Maddie back in the rotation," said assistant Palatine coach Kristen Proffitt. "She has great command and she's a solid fielder who takes away a lot of hits up the middle and turns them into outs.

"Our pitchers are continuing to work as a unit, and they're coming together to give each other the best chances. Having three pitchers (Sarah Grossman and Rhiann Dick) like this is unusual in fastpitch, and they all have great team attitudes."

Grace Gran drove home the run for Buffalo Grove (11-12, 3-8).

Fremd 6, Wheeling 0: Junior Hannah Ban (3-1) threw a 2-hit shutout with 4 strikeouts as visiting Fremd improved to 13-5 and 8-3 in the MSL West.

Jess Mazur (2 runs), Lexi D'Ambrosio, Anne Marie O'Sullivian and Ban (triple) each had a RBI for Fremd while Sophia Stanke (triple) and Arielle Rosenton had the hits for Wheeling (2-16, 0-11).

Conant 10, Prospect 6: Conant junior Jackie Carlucci (6-2) struck out eight as the winning pitcher while top hitters for the visiting Cougars (16-4, 10-2) were Sam Gadomski (2-for-5, double), Jackie Burchfield (2-for-5, double), Lauren Grzelak (2-for-4, home run, double), Morgan Bihun (3-for-4, home run, triple) Paige Nallen (3-for-4) and Sydney Correa (double).

Prospect (9-9, 4-7) was led on offense by Jackie Orel (2-for-3, 2 doubles), Alyssa Cacini (2-for-4) and Alex Kanter who belted a home run. Madeleine Borkowski and Claire Doherty shared pitching duties for the Knights.

Deerfield 3, Maine West 1: Deerfield avenged a 5-4 CSL North loss to host Maine West (9-11, 3-3).

Gabrielle Demma went 2-for-2 with the Warriors' RBI while Amanda Byrne was 2-for-3. West's other hit was a double by Anne Lipinski as freshman Jessica Steingard took the loss.

Marian Central Catholic 3, St. Viator 2: The visiting Lions (9-8) tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning when Haley Robinson (3 hits) singled and went to third on a sacrifice. She came home after an errant throw.

Robinson also scored to make ti 2-2 in the sixth when she singled and scored on Cam VanValkenburg's second hit of the game. Grace Kaiser also had 3 hits for the Lions
