Baseball: St. Viator pulls out win over Marian Central

St. Viator's Hunter Johnson drove in the decisive run with a single in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Lions' baseball team won 7-6 for a second straight victory against visiting Marian Central Catholic on Tuesday.

Cole Kmet hit his ninth homer this spring and drove in 2 runs, finishing 1-for-2 with a walk for St. Viator - yet on this day, the Lions had an even bigger hitter.

Jack Mahoney finished 3-for-4 with a homer and a double and scored 3 runs.

Casey Kmet and Johnson both contributed 2 hits.

Ryan Stejskal tossed the last 2 relief innings and held Marian Central scoreless to earn the victory.

St. Viator improved to 12-8 overall and squared its record in the East Suburban Catholic at 4-4.

Barrington 9, Prospect 8 (9 inn.): The visiting Broncos won the completion of last Friday's matchup of Mid-Suburban League unbeatens, which had been suspended at an 8-8 tie after 7 innings.

Eric Kozlowski's two-out single scored Tyler Trojan, who'd walked to start the ninth inning and took second on a sacrifice.

The outcome leaves Barrington (17-5, 7-0) as the MSL West leader, 2 games ahead of Palatine, and the only unbeaten team in league competition.

The loss leaves Prospect (9-8, 6-1) tied with Buffalo Grove (14-1-1, 6-1) for the MSL East lead.

Leyden 1, Morton 0: Michael Wilms pitched a gem as the host Eagles topped the Mustangs for the second straight day in West Suburban Gold play.

Wilms went the distance, allowing 4 hits but no walks with 7 strikeouts.

Leyden (9-3) produced only 3 hits against Ruben Torres (5 IP) and Christian Villagomez. But Justin Borges and Nick Herrera had doubles, and Josh Cubon finished 1-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base and scored the game's only run.

Maine West 8, Highland Park 1: The Warriors (6-11) were limited to 4 singles and a double by Cory Scholler in dropping a Central Suburban North contest at home. Matty Mustari drove in Nick Stone for Maine West's run.

Rockford Christian Life 1, Christian Liberty 0: The visiting Chargers were limited to 1 hit as Mark Cabrera took a tough-luck loss.
