Reinhart relentess in DH sweep for Platteville

In Wisconsin-Platteville's doubleheader against Simpson University, senior left fielder Kyle Reinhart made sure to double his fun.

The Schaumburg graduate smashed a 3-run homer and finished with 5 RBI game in a 14-7 victory in the opening game.

In a 10-2 win in Game 2, he slugged his 3-run homer of the day, giving him 8 RBI in the twin bill.

A little more than week later, Reinhart belted a walk-off home run in the 12th inning to lift the Pioneers to a 6-5 win over Illinois Tech.

At the time, the Pioneers went into conference play with a 10-game winning streak and Reinhart was leading was the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with 4 home runs.

Reinhardt is currently batting .299 for the Pioneers, who are 17-10

• Fontbonne University junior Ryan Schocker (Schaumburg) was named the St. Louis Intercollgiate Athletic Conference/Diamond Sports Baseball hitter of the week.

Schocker led the Griffins offense that scored 43 runs over six games. He hit .520 on the week with 2 homers and 13 RBI.

He went 13-of-25 and recorded a hit in all six games, driving in at least 1 run in five of the games. He had four multihit games including a high of 4 hits in a win over MacMurray. Schocker added a grand slam home run against Spalding for the winning runs as well.

• Augustana senior Nick Refka (Palatine) has been one of the leaders out of the bullpen. He is 2-2 with a 2.25 ERA in 10 appearances.

Men's track

Augustana junior Evan Murphy (Buffalo Grove) placed fourth with a mark of 45 feet, 4½ inches in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Ashton May Invitational on the campus of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Softball

St. Thomas University junior Sammy Hogan (St. Viator) struck out five in her seventh complete game to help lead the Tommies to an 8-1 triumph over Concordia-Moorhead in the second game of a doubleheader.

Hogan is 9-2 with 7 complete games and a 2.83 ERA for the Tommies (22-6 overall, 9-3 MIAC).

• Carthage sophomore Hailey Rothstein (Conant) went 3-for-3 in the Lady Reds' 9-1 win over Ripon which completed a doubleheader sweep. Rothstein gave Carthage the lead for good with a second-inning home run to make the score 2-1. Lady Reds senior catcher Kristine Herdegen (Fremd) had 3 walks and scored 2 runs in the game.

The sweep gave Carthage a 20-8 overall record and 9-1 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. The Lady Reds now hold more victories than last season (19) with 12 games remaining on the 2017 schedule.

Lacrosse

Schaumburg senior all-state lacrosse midfielder Michael Anzelmo signed his letter of intent with Division I Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo. last week.

Anzelmo broke the school's lacrosse scoring record with 80 goals last season when the Saxons went 15-3. He led the state in goals and assists and was named all-conference and all-state for midfielders.

Also, Michael Eaker of Schaumburg committed to North Central University in Naperville.

Women's bowling

Former Hoffman Estates four-year varsity bowler Sarah Willie and her McKendree women's bowling team earned its first NCAA national championship. The Bearcats posted a 4-0 victory over the University of Nebraska in the title match at the Raising Cane's River Center in Baton Rouge, LA.

Adrian walks on

In addition two high school seniors who signed their National Letters of Intent to attend Bradley, the Braves also announced preferred walk-on Missy Adrian's (Fremd) commitment for next season.

Adrian was a team captain for Fremd this winter and helped the Vikings to three consecutive IHSA Class 4A state semifinal appearances, which included back-to-back state runner-up showings in 2014-15 and 2015-16. In her three varsity seasons, Fremd posted an 87-16 (. 845) record. As a senior she averaged seven points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and nearly two steals per outing while shooting 59 percent from the field.

"Missy is a great addition to our basketball family and is a perfect complement to our other newcomers," said Bradley coach Andrea Gorski. "She has a winning background and her work ethic combined with her commitment to excellence will have a positive impact on our program. We are excited to watch her grow both on and off the court during her time at Bradley."

A Daily Herald all-area selection in basketball, Adrian also lettered in soccer, helping the Vikings to a regional championship in 2016 and chose to walk-on at Bradley despite receiving scholarship offers to play NCAA Division I soccer.

Bradley's 2017-18 roster will feature five newcomers, including Adrian, the two recent signees, and three fall signees. The Braves also return 10 letter winners from 2016-17.

Hersey's super seven

Seven Hersey student/athletes were recognized for their college choices last Wednesday.

Hersey assistant principal/student activities John Novak provided us this list: Kelly Weyhrich (basketball at Elmhurst), Gibby Eshoo (football at Wisconsin-Oshkosh), Jackie Bednar (softball at Oberlin College), Emma Wrenn (bowling at St. Francis PA.), Sarah Harden (cross-country and track at Taylor University), Hailey Bowes (cross-country and track at Ohio University) and Nick Tinaglia (football at Wisconsin-Oshkosh).

"Order of Titans"

The 2017 inductees into the Illinois Wesleyan University "Order of Titans" honorary were announced at the annual "Tommy" Award banquet last week and two former Mid-Suburban League athletes were recognized.

Women's golfer Jackie Halden (Conant) and baseball player Jarrod Juskiewicz (Palatine) were chosen.

Student-athletes from the graduating senior class are chosen annually by members of the coaching staff and are selected on the basis of academic accomplishments, athletic contributions, and general citizenship.

The awards were presented to male athletes only until 1975 with women included as honorees since 1976. "Order of Titans" members receive lifetime passes to IWU home athletic events.

Men's volleyball

Wheeling senior Matt Schiferl has committed to Augustana to played for coach Mark Lau's inaugural Vikings team.

Schiferl, a libero and three-year varsity letter winner and two-time team captain for Coach Jason Kopkowski's Wildcats, was all-area as a junior.

In the Wildcats' first 13 matches this season, he has recorded team bests of 178 digs and 12 service aces for the Wildcats (7-6). He also has 22 assists, 114 serve receptions and is serving at a .874 rate.

Schiferl joins a Viking program that will begin play in 2018. Lau, who led Graceland University to a 25-8 record and a number four national ranking in the NAIA in 2016, was named Augustana's first head coach in April of 2016.

Men's hockey

Wisconsin senior Aidan Cavallini (Barrington) was named the winner of the 2017 Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award.

The award honors the memory of Hines, a former Army West Point player who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2005.

It's awarded to a player "who displays exemplary sportsmanship, is supremely competitive, intelligent and extraordinarily conditioned with an unmatched work ethic."

Cavallini entered his senior season at Wisconsin with no collegiate goals. He scored six in his final year, starting with a Dec. 9 victory at Michigan.

A finance major and a Big Ten All-Academic honoree, Cavallini also serves the community with volunteer activities.
