Good old volunteer spirit has spiffed up another corner in downtown Geneva. The canopied information kiosk by the Kane County Courthouse at Third and Franklin streets had become a neglected repository for taxi-service stickers, baby-sitter-available notices and the like.

The windshield and left mirror were broken, the driver's door was dented and scratched, and the hood was scratched on a Jeep Cherokee parked in the 1500 block of Meadows Road between 11:30 p.m. June 27 and 9:30 a.m. June 28.

Batavia MainStreet reports that five new businesses opened in Batavia in May, two businesses expanded, two closed or moved out of the downtown and that six were issued building permits for improvements.

An Elgin man was arrested on a retail theft charge at 10:56 a.m. Thursday after he entered the Burlington Coat Factory, 250 S. Randall Road, with a brown leather coat on and wore a $280 leather coat out of the store, reports said.

The Huntley village board has selected a Naperville-based firm to draft a plan to revitalize the village's historic downtown. The village will pay Houseal Lavigne Associates about $50,000 to complete the study, which will include a vision of the downtown, a survey of transportation and potential funding sources for a downtown facelift.

We've all seen them on the roads - big rigs hauling heavy, oversized loads. The operators of those trucks need permits, or they're subject to fines. Just ask truck driver Bill Carlson. He got hit with a fine that'll take your breath away.
