Aurora man charged with murder in Friday shooting

Correction to a previous version: Authorities say the defendant drove the shooter to and from the shooting.

A 20-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a man Friday in Aurora.

Bail was set at $1 million Tuesday for Ivan Valles, of the 500 block of Seventh Avenue in Aurora, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department.

He is charged with killing Fernando Carapia, 32.

According to a news release from the Kane County State's Attorney's office, Valles drove a car to the 300 block of South Spencer Street around 4:45 p.m. Someone got out of the car and fired several gunshots, killing Carapia. The shooter got back in to the car.

Police went to a house on the 700 block of South Spencer at 1 a.m. Saturday to arrest Valles, but he refused to come out, and there was a standoff for about two hours. Officers entered the house at 3:45 a.m. and took Valles and another person into custody, police officials previously said.

Police have not provided any information about what led to the shooting.

In August, Valles was charged with possession of a firearm by a street gang member, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and resisting a peace officer, according to Kane County court records. He was free on $4,500 bail. He was convicted in October on an ordinance-violation charge of disorderly conduct.

Valles' next court date is Friday before Kane County Judge Alice Tracy.

The investigation is ongoing. Aurora police ask anyone with information to call the investigations division at (630) 256-5500, or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000.
