Man killed when car crashes into Benton Township assessor's office

A 23-year-old man was killed and two other men were injured early Sunday when a car they were riding in crashed into the Benton Township Assessor's Office in northern Lake County, authorities said.

Lake County Sheriff's deputies discovered the wreck when responding to the area of Green Bay and Kenosha roads in Beach Park about 2:30 a.m. for a reported of a single-vehicle crash.

A preliminary investigation shows that a 2014 Nissan Altima driven by a 36-year-old Chicago man was southwest on Kenosha Road when it blew through a stop sign at Green Bay Road, struck an embankment and then crashed into the assessor's office at 40020 North Green Bay Road, sheriff's police said.

The back-seat passenger, a 23-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff's office. The Lake County Coroner's Office responded and is scheduling an autopsy.

The driver was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville by Flight for Life helicopter with life-threatening injuries, authorities said. The front-seat passenger, a 23-year-old Lake Geneva, Wisconsin man, was taken to Vista East Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
