Aurora police vehicle responding to burglary crashes into building

An Aurora police officer crashed a patrol vehicle into an automobile shop early Sunday while responding to reports of a burglary nearby, authorities said.

The officer was heading to the burglary about 12:30 a.m. when a car turned in front of him on East New York Street, police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said. The officer attempted to avoid the car but slightly struck it.

The police vehicle then hit a traffic standard and crashed into the Torres Auto Service and Tire Shop at 1004 E. New York St., Ferrelli said. The crash caused "substantial damage" to the building and vehicle, he said.

The officer, the vehicle's only occupant, suffered minor injuries, Ferrelli said. No other injuries were reported.

Additional information was not immediately available about the burglary, which occurred a few blocks away in the 1000 block of Claim Street.
