Community Days festival opens in Mundelein

The heavy rainstorm that caused some flooding in central Mundelein earlier this week couldn't keep the annual Community Days festival from launching Thursday afternoon.

People flocked to the carnival rides, midway games, food booths and musical performances.

Most Community Days events are held in and around Kracklauer Park, which is at Seymour Avenue north of Crystal Street. Parts of that neighborhood were temporarily under water after Tuesday's storm.

The festival runs through Sunday night. Friday's activities include a hot dog-eating contest at 4 p.m. and fire engine rides that run from 4 to 8 p.m. The carnival will be open from 5 to 11 p.m.
