District 54 extends contracts for 8 top administrators

Expressing strong support for their eight top administrators, Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54 board members Thursday approved the extension of their contracts to five years.

Superintendent Andy DuRoss, Associate Superintendent Nick Myers and five assistant superintendents also received a raise of 3 percent for the coming school year. Due to pay scale rules, Assistant Superintendent for Business Operations Ric King received a 2 percent raise, board President Mary Kay Prusnick said.

"We're trying to say, 'We value you and want you to plan your future in District 54,'" she said of the contract extensions. "In my perfect world, I'd want to hold onto these eight individuals as long as I can."

Prusnick had particular praise for DuRoss, who just completed his fifth year as superintendent.

"It wouldn't be the district it is without him," she said. "What I really believe he brings is a long-term vision for the future. We're so lucky that this is where he works."

Despite the five-year contracts, salaries for the eight administrators will continue to be determined annually.

The base salaries for 2018-19 will be:

• DuRoss, $240,824.

• Myers, $189,972.

• King, $186,63.

• Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Peter Hannigan, $166,900.

• Assistant Superintendent for District Improvement Paul Goldberg, $161,362.

• Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Erin Knoll, $161,361.

• Assistant Superintendent for Language and Culture Danette Meyer, $158,257.

• Assistant Superintendent for Special Education Cassie Williams $158,257.

"Instead of listing all those names, you could just say 'The Dream Team,'" board member Bill Harper said before the 6-0 vote. Board member Jim Pye was absent.

The contracts also promise annual tax-sheltered pension-fund payments of $10,500 for DuRoss and $3,000 for the others. DuRoss has a monthly car allowance of $600, while the rest will get $362.

Though Prusnick said DuRoss' conduct has been above reproach since an official reprimand four years ago, his contract retains a unique ethics clause added when he pleaded guilty to reckless driving after initially being charged with drunken driving in February 2014.
