Aurora police: Man tossed weapon onto roof while fleeing

A 20-year-old man is facing a list of weapons charges after Aurora police say he threw a loaded firearm onto a rooftop while police were pursuing him.

Terrence T. Mading Jr., of the 0-99 of Cannonball Trail in Bristol, has been charged in Kane County with being an armed habitual criminal, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a defaced firearm, police said Friday.

The charges stem from an encounter Monday that began about 6:40 p.m., when two Aurora community policing officers tried to stop a vehicle in the area of South Broadway and Ashland Avenue. Instead of pulling over, police said the vehicle sped up and headed south.

Police said Mading was one of three passengers in the vehicle, all of whom exited and began to run before police got the driver to stop on the 100 block of Riverside Drive in Montgomery. The driver was given traffic citations.

Bystanders who pointed out the direction the men ran helped police take them all into custody without incident, authorities said. Two of the men were released without being charged.

But when officers searched the path where Mading ran, they found a firearm on a garage roof, leading to the weapons charges he faces now.
