Mundelein to scrutinize sewers
Mundelein trustees on Monday hired a Wheaton company to locate illegal residential connections to the village sanitary sewer system, as well as defects that could allow rainwater to enter the pipes. The RJN Group will handle the project, which will focus on the center of town. The same firm was hired last year to help determine why that part of Mundelein flooded so badly during a July 2017 rainstorm. The work will cost the village roughly $86,213. The RJN Group's initial study confirmed excess rainwater gets into some sanitary sewers throughout Mundelein, resulting in the type of sewage backups many people experienced during the disastrous flood. The water likely gets into the sanitary sewers through defects in the pipes, such as cracks or holes, as well as improper customer hookups, a consultant said at the time.
