Man charged with fleeing from Arlington Heights cops, possessing heroin

A 26-year-old man who led Arlington Heights police on a foot chase after a traffic stop Tuesday morning later was discovered in a backyard and arrested on drug possession charges, authorities said.

Keith Manning, of Bellwood, is charged with resisting a peace officer, unlawful possession of heroin and unlawful possession of heroin with intent to deliver.

Police said it all started about 9 a.m. when an officer on patrol near Golf and Algonquin roads stopped a four-door sedan for a vehicle code violation. When speaking with the driver and passenger, later identified as Manning, the officer smelled marijuana and asked both people to get out of the car, according to police.

The female driver, who was not charged, exited, but Manning jumped into the driver's seat and tried to flee, police said.

The officer was able to get Manning out of the car before he could drive off, but after a brief struggle, the Bellwood man ran away, police said.

Sgt. Chuck Buczynski said a nearby resident called 911 about 20 minutes later to report a suspicious person in her backyard, where officers came to arrest the man, identified as Manning.

A subsequent search of the car turned up several hundred small plastic bags containing heroin, police said.

Manning is due in bond court Wednesday afternoon.
