Vernon Hills man killed, another injured in McHenry County crash

A 77-year-old Vernon Hills man died while another man suffered minor injuries in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday in an unincorporated area near Richmond, authorities said.

The crash occurred around 7 a.m. at the intersection of Tryon Grove and Keystone roads.

A preliminary investigation revealed a 2007 Toyota Prius, driven by Eduard Modilevsky, was traveling north on Keystone approaching Tryon Grove where the vehicle stopped at a stop sign.

Then, for unknown reasons, the Prius pulled in front of a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban driven by a 32-year-old Woodstock man traveling east on Tryon Grove, west of Keystone where there was no stop sign, authorities said.

Modilevsky was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy conducted Wednesday revealed he died of blunt trauma to the chest, McHenry County Coroner Anne Majewski said.

The driver of the Suburban was taken to Centegra Hospital in McHenry.

Air bags deployed in the Prius, but not the Suburban. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash, authorities said.

The McHenry County Sheriff's Major Crash Investigation Unit and coroner's office are investigating.
