Runners and walkers of all ages helped fight hunger Saturday in the Foodie 5K Series at Independence Grove near Libertyville.
The Foodie 5K benefits the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The series also includes an April 7 race in Wheaton and a Sept. 15 race in Romeoville.
Runner Stephanie McNulty, 25, of Mundelein, said she also is running in the Chicago Marathon to raise money for the Greater Chicago Food Depository.
"As a registered dietitian I am really passionate about the message behind the Foodie event," McNulty said, adding though that she was "glad it was over." She said she missed the race last year and really wanted to do it this year.
Last year, the Foodie 5Ks attracted more than 2,500 participants and raised more than $209,000 to support the food bank's efforts of solving hunger across its 13-county service area.
"We are so excited for the Foodie 5K to be returning to DuPage, Lake and Will counties after a great outpouring of support last year," said Kate Thomas, special events coordinator at the food bank. "These races offer a fun and interactive way for people to engage with the food bank's message and to give back right in their own communities."
