Police: 12 unlocked cars burglarized in Naperville

Twelve drivers who left their vehicles unlocked Sunday in Naperville reported burglaries to police, who now are searching for suspects and following leads.

Naperville police Cmdr. Bob Lee said the string of burglaries occurred between roughly 8 and 11 p.m. Sunday between Route 59 on the west, 87th Street on the north, Skylane Drive on the east and Leverenz Road on the south. Burglaries were reported on the 2800 and 2900 blocks of Gypsum Circle, 2800 block of Cedar Glade Drive and the 2900 block of Bartlett Court.

Police have remained in the area throughout Monday to investigate, but they do not yet have a suspect description. Lee said the burglar or burglars stole miscellaneous items from the vehicles, and police are not disclosing exactly what was taken.

Despite running a "Lock It or Lose It" campaign and educating residents through social media posts and homeowners association newsletters about the need to lock car doors, Lee said some drivers fall victim to burglaries when they leave their vehicles unsecured.

"It's unfortunate, but in this community, a majority of the motor vehicles (burglarized), about 95 percent, are left unlocked," Lee said.

Police ask anyone else who had items stolen from their vehicle to report it. Anyone with information about the burglaries is asked to call Lee at (630) 305-5271.
