Police: Aurora man tried to kidnap woman, then beat and robbed man days later

A 28-year-old Aurora man is being held on $300,000 bail after police say he tried to kidnap a woman at an Aurora apartment complex last week while she was doing laundry and days later beat a man with a metal pipe and robbed him.

Ryon E. Lumpkins, of the 1100 block of Terrace Lake Drive, is charged with kidnapping in the earlier case and aggravated robbery and aggravated battery in the latter.

Around 8:30 p.m. Feb. 26, a 30-year-old woman was doing laundry in the laundry room of the apartment complex when she was approached by man who began a conversation with her, she told police. The woman ignored him, and he forced her into an apartment, saying he had a knife.

Once inside, the man began to beat her and demanded that she perform sex acts on him, but after the woman realized that he was not armed, she fought back, escaped and called 911, police said.

By the time officers arrived at the apartment that the man claimed was his, he had left the area.

At about 12:45 a.m. Thursday, Lumpkins and another man confronted and beat a man near the Grant Place and South Avenue apartment where they'd been hanging out, according to police. The victim, who was on crutches, had a bag containing two cellphones and some personal documents that were stolen.

Around 1:35 a.m., a patrol officer who had been watching the Grant Place apartment saw a person matching Lumpkins' description get into a car. The officer stopped the car, had Lumpkins to get out and searched him - finding one of the victim's cellphones, police said.

Police said Lumpkins also suffering from a stab wound to his back and was taken to an Aurora hospital. It is not clear how he suffered the wound, which was not life-threatening, police said.

Three other passengers in the car were not charged. However, the driver of the vehicle was wanted on a retail theft warrant out of DuPage County. Police did not release the driver's name.

The victim's other cellphone and bag were found during a search of the Grant Place apartment, police said.

Detectives are following leads to identify the other man who was with Lumpkins, police said, and authorities have not ruled out additional charges.

During their investigation of the robbery, police gathered information that confirmed their hunch that Lumpkins was the laundry room attacker, police said.

If Lumpkins posts $30,000 bond to be released from the Kane County jail while the cases are pending, he is to have no contact with either victim. He is next due in court Wednesday and faces up to seven years in prison on the kidnapping charge and up to five years in prison on the robbery charge.
