Carpentersville man facing gun, drug charges

A Carpentersville man who police say had a gun and cannabis in his car was charged with three felonies on Sunday.

Daniel Saavedra, 27, was charged with armed violence, possession of cannabis, and intent to sell cannabis. Under Illinois law, a person armed with a gun when they commit a felony is charged with armed violence as opposed to unlawful gun possession.

Carpentersville police stopped Saavedra for a traffic offense and then discovered the gun and drugs, according to a news release from the Kane County state's attorney's office. Saaverdra had 79 grams of cannabis on him when he was stopped, as well as a digital scale and Ziploc baggies, the release said.

A judge set Saavedra's bail Sunday at $50,000; he is due back in court Wednesday.
