St. Charles firefighters rescue woman from apartment fire

Firefighters rescued a woman from a fire in her apartment Thursday night at Carroll Tower in downtown St. Charles.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at 200 N. Second St. at 10:39 p.m. and found the fire in a unit on the second floor of the six-story apartment building, Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said.

The woman was unable to exit her apartment, and firefighters removed her from the building. She was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva with injuries not considered to be life-threatening, he said.

The sprinkler system kept the fire from spreading beyond where it started in the kitchen. Firefighters extinguished the blaze in about 15 minutes. Firefighters remained at the scene until after midnight, clearing the smoke and helping residents return to their homes, Schelstreet said.

The fire appears to have started on a stovetop and is considered accidental. It's estimated to have caused about $50,000 in damage, he said.

Carroll Tower has 108 rental units for seniors.
