Aurora police: Man spied on ex-girlfriend with hidden cameras, tracked vehicles

A 25-year-old man is accused of using hidden cameras to spy on his ex-girlfriend at her Aurora apartment and placing tracking devices on vehicles belonging to other people in her building.

Juan M. Ramos-Avila, of the 500 block of North Avenue, Aurora, has been charged with felony residential burglary, unauthorized video recording, eavesdropping and unlawful use of a tracking device, according to police and Kane County court records.

Aurora police said Ramos-Avila Thursday entered the woman's apartment on the 1900 block of Lilac Lane. Authorities were called and he was arrested.

"Hidden video cameras and audio recording equipment had been found by the tenants of the apartment on the previous day. Tracking devices were also found on the vehicle that belonged to tenants of that apartment," Aurora police said in an email, declining to elaborate on where the devices were found and how many there were.

According to court records, the most severe charge of residential burglary comes from Ramos-Avila entering the building with the intent to obtain an unauthorized recording. Records do not state anything was stolen.

Ramos-Avila is free on bail while the case is pending.

If convicted of the most severe charge of burglary, he faces four to 15 years in prison, but probation is an option.

Ramos-Avila is due in court March 21.

He does not have any previous criminal arrests in the county, records show.
