ComEd, Round Lake Park school celebrate winning video

Seven months after flooding caused extensive damage to W.J. Murphy Elementary School in Round Lake Park, there was cause for celebration by students and staff.

ComEd representatives honored the school for a flood-related video crafted last fall by a team of fifth-graders that won one of the grand prizes in the company's KidVid Contest. The video and team were appropriately called the "Flash Flooders."

Fifteen schools in northern Illinois and more than 110 students entered the contest, where topics included storm response, power reliability, electrical safety, energy efficiency and ComEd in the Community. Five grand prizes were awarded to schools.

Friday, ComEd threw a party for Murphy's fifth-graders at nearby St. Paul Lutheran Church. The party included watching video entries, handing out awards, giving safety messages and eating snacks.

Each team member received a $50 gift card and the school received $2,500. The money will go to purchase maker space items in the school's new Limitless Learning Commons, which will replace the flood-damaged library.

Winning team members include Brooke Lauritzen, Crystal Flores, Briana Gonzales Davis, Aimee Arizmendi, Logan Ramirez, Eduardo Pedrozo and Iroel Velazquez.

The Murphy video will be posted on ComEd's YouTube channel during April.
