Eclectic mix entertains at Arlington Heights library

The audience listened intently Sunday as soprano Deborah Bulgrin sang "Selve amiche" by Italian composer Antonio Caldara during a performance by the Bel Sonore Chamber Ensemble at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library.

A crowd of nearly 100 heard Bulgrin sing with the woodwind ensemble that included Claudia Cryer on flute, Nancy Hagen on oboe and English horn, and Thomas Bulgrin on bassoon, performing a mixture of music ranging from Italian Baroque arias to the jazz standards of Harold Arlen and George Gershwin.

"It's chamber music but is a little different because we have this trio with a voice, so the music has to be arranged for this particular combination," Thomas Bulgrin said. "We get all kinds of people. Sometimes they're very serious, classical music fans and sometimes they're people who have stumbled onto us. We try to make it more accessible."

The concert concluded with the ensemble playing several jazz tunes such as "It's Only a Paper Moon" by Arlen, "What's New" by Bob Haggart, and "Someone to Watch over Me" by Gershwin.
