Nobody injured in St. Charles apartment fire

No injuries were reported in a Wednesday afternoon fire on the top floor of a St. Charles apartment complex, authorities said.

Crews responded about 12:50 p.m. to Surrey Hill Apartments at 201 N. Tyler Road and found flames visible from the fourth-floor balconies of two apartments, fire officials said. Some residents were evacuating the 118-unit building, while others remained inside.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which caused about $10,000 in damage and was contained to the balconies and roof overhangs, authorities said. Nobody was home at the apartment where the fire began.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
