Geneva, Stevenson aiming to defend state titles in competitive dance

Dance squads from Geneva High School and Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire are heading downstate to Bloomington this weekend with their sights set on defending their titles at the 2018 IHSA Competitive Dance finals.

The teams are among more than 35 from the North, Northwest and West suburbs scheduled to participate in the event, set to kick off at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Grossinger Motors Arena.

Schools compete in three divisions, broken down by size of enrollment. The preliminary round takes place Friday, after which the top-scoring teams will move on to compete Saturday.

The finals begin at 11 a.m. Saturday for 1A teams and 2 p.m. for the larger 2A and 3A squads. Awards ceremonies will follow both portions of the finals.

Geneva won its fourth consecutive state title in the 2A division last year. Stevenson won the 3A title after placing second in 2016.

Other suburban squads returning after top 12 finishes in 2017 include: Huntley, Maine South, Lake Park, South Elgin, York, Glenbrook South, Naperville North, Libertyville, Fenton, Wauconda, Mundelein, Vernon Hills, Lake Zurich, Montini and Aurora Central.

Tickets are $10 per session. The competition also can be viewed streaming online at the NFHS Network.
