Prosecutors: Arlington Hts. man had nearly 14 pounds of marijuana

An Arlington Heights man who authorities say possessed almost 14 pounds of marijuana - with a street value of more than $125,000 - was ordered held Thursday on a total bail of $115,000.

David Trevino, 32, was charged with possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, a class X felony punishable by up to 30 years in prison.

At the time of his arrest, Trevino was on bond for reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Jennifer Gates.

On Tuesday, members of the Illinois State Police North Central Narcotics Task Force encountered Trevino on the stairway of his apartment building where they were about to execute a search warrant of his home, Gates said.

Officers recovered a plastic-wrapped block of marijuana, which weighed 5,856.6 grams or almost 13 pounds, in Trevino's bedroom, Gates said. Near a coffee table, officers recovered 454 grams of marijuana, prepackaged for sale in quarter-pound increments, Gates said. From Trevino's waistband, officers recovered another 8 grams, Gates said.

In total, officers recovered 6,318.6 grams of marijuana with a street value of $126,360, Gates said.

Cook County Judge Steven J. Goebel set bail at $100,000 for the new charge and $15,000 for the previous charge. Goebel granted prosecutors' request for a source of bail funds hearing should Trevino post bail.

Trevino also has a 2008 conviction out of Michigan for drug possession, according to Gates.

He next appears in court on Feb. 8.
